Last Friday, our fearless leader, Em Dash, announced the Unbossed Miscreant of the Week program, complete with cool graphics and a poll. All of which seems to be beyond my technical capabilities. Em Dash is away, so I will try to fill her sassy boots in my wobbly fashion - or Wobbly fashion.

It's been a busy, tough week for me too. So I am stealing my miscreants from someone else. They are :

Horatio Alger
John Wayne
Robert Young

Why? you may well ask. Or maybe you agree about John Wayne, but the rest?

According to the stealee, these three men have created the society we have and laid the foundation for our values. We owe it to them that unions and other institutions that depend on community and communitarian values are foundering.

Horatio Alger gave us the idea that everyone can get ahead, and if we don't it's our own fault. As a result of his influence, people resent those who make just a little more than they do and have contempt for those who make less but admire and uncritical of those who make a lot more. Let me add, that I have never met anyone who worked at any of the auto plants who wasn't certain that he would one day open his own shop and make a bundle. Maybe some do.

John Wayne is just too obvious but important to remember for his contribution. We should all just suck it up and go it alone. And we should be patriots who never question our country.

Robert Young because father knows best. We are not supposed to question father. But democracy demands that we question and think for ourselves.

By the way, in looking for a few links on these guys, I found lots of evidence that the guy whose ideas these are was really onto something. Here's one more Horatio Alger link. There's lots more.

ICE (formerly INS) has moved its miscreant level lower by agreeing to stop impersonating OSHA inspectors in its round ups. There was huge concern that workers would hesitate to call OSHA when there were serious health and safegy issues.

How about the IT folks who seem clueless about how to take well known precautions. One of them got his just deserts this past week when this email was sent from his account:

"Hello, and good-day. My name is Identity Theft Victim, Stephen C. Allen — LSC LAN/System Administrator," the missive, sent to all Lyndon computer users, said. "This email is being sent because I chose not to change my default e-mail password, allowing my account to be hijacked through simple methods. Recently 20,000+ VSC student, alumni, faculty and staff identities were compromised through the theft of a stolen VSC laptop."

LOL, shirah. Can we blame Pat Boone, too? I haven't formulated any reasons yet -- it just seems right.

How about Jack Abramoff? He doesn't go with the theme, but he's back in the news.

Yes! Jack Abramoff should always be at the top of the list. Dang, it's so hard to choose just one...

Maybe we need two lists - one for big in the news miscreants and the other for sbd (silent but deadly) miscreants.
